How do people in the UK feel about the concept of the metaverse? To find out, GetApp surveyed Britons to understand their awareness, perceptions, and adoption of this virtual reality space. Some already know about it, while others are not too sure. There may be many questions surrounding its adoption, usage, and future applications. Although the metaverse can present opportunities for businesses to expand the reach of their product and services, it can also possibly ignite conversations regarding the challenges they may face in such a simulated reality. According to a report, ‘Gartner expects that by 2026, 25% of people will spend at least one hour a day in a metaverse for work, shopping, education, social media and/or entertainment.’What is the metaverse?The metaverse is like a virtual ‘real’ world and although it exists virtually, it has a real-world feel. When in the metaverse, users can engage in several ways with digital objects, virtual worlds, and real people who are online, making it an immersive multi-user experience that anybody with access to it anywhere in the world may enjoy. In this first part of our two-part series, we asked people in the UK what their level of understanding of the metaverse is. We also tried to gauge the degree of satisfaction of those users who have been engaging with the metaverse. To do this, we surveyed 997 participants in October 2022 above the age of 18 from different parts of the UK. For the full methodology, scroll to the bottom of this article.Very few have accessed the metaverse in the UKSurprisingly, we found that very few of our respondents stated that they had ever accessed the metaverse. Here are the responses:37% of respondents are aware of the concept of the metaverseBefore we dive into the complexities around the metaverse, it may be helpful to know how many people are familiar with this concept. When we asked the survey-takers if they were aware of the concept of the metaverse before reading its definition in the questionnaire, 37% said that they knew exactly what it meant. This is followed by 30% who said that they knew the name but not the concept, while 21% knew the concept but did not know the name.38% have neutral feelings about the metaverseWhen we asked respondents what their general feeling is about the metaverse according to the definition in the questionnaire, 38% of respondents stated they have neutral feelings about it, followed by 27% who feel somewhat positive about it, and 16% who feel somewhat negative about it. Moreover, 14% feel very positive about it.45% feel that the metaverse is here to stayWhen we asked respondents ‘How do you think the trend of the metaverse will develop in the future?’, as many as 45% of respondents said that the trend is here to stay, and that it will affect everyone's life to some extent. This is followed by 34% saying that it is here to stay, but only for a very small audience, and 12% say that it is here to stay, and it will affect everyone's life to a great extent. Lastly, 9% feel that it will fade away before it becomes something really important.46% of current users use it to keep up with tech trendsWhat could be some of the forces driving people to try the metaverse? When we asked current metaverse users what their primary reason for accessing it when they used it for the first time was, 46% said it was because they always like to keep up-to-date with tech trends. This is followed by 28% who heard about it from friends, while 22% of respondents stated it was because they wanted to join a specific event or game.49% first used the metaverse less than 6 months agoWhen we asked current metaverse users when they used it for the first time, 49% said that they used it less than 6 months ago, followed by 38% having used it between six months and one year ago, and 13% having used it more than one year ago.Majority of current users use the metaverse for gamingWhich activities are people using the metaverse for? We asked current metaverse users the same question and the following answers were recorded:43% of current users use VR headsets to access the metaverseWhich is the top device to experience the metaverse? When we asked those respondents who have accessed the metaverse about the devices they use to access it, we found that 43% access it through a virtual reality (VR) headset, followed by 30% using a laptop, 28% using a desktop computer and smartphone each, and 15% using a tablet.Are current users satisfied with their use of the metaverse?What is the level of satisfaction of the current users of the metaverse so far? To gauge that, we asked this to our respondents, and 55% said that they are somewhat satisfied, followed by 32% who are strongly satisfied. However, 12% said that they are somewhat dissatisfied.56% current users never purchased anything in the metaverseAre users using the metaverse to buy things, services, or experiences? 56% of the respondents who have accessed the metaverse have never used it to purchase anything, whereas 44% have made a purchase through it. This may offer businesses a new opportunity to connect with their buyers and sell their products in a new sphere.67% of non-users interested in using it out of curiosityWhen we asked non-users who are interested in using the metaverse why they wanted to use it, 67% said that they wanted to use it out of curiosity. This is followed by 34% of the respondents who want to use it for unique or exclusive experiences, 33% who want to use it to socialise, 29% who want to use it to shop online, 22% who want to use it for the convenience of meeting people, and 21% want to use it because it seems to be a new trend. In addition, 13% want to use it for business purposes and 10% of respondents want to use it for professional reasons.44% do not know how to enter the metaverseWe tried to understand why non-users who are interested in using the metaverse haven't accessed it yet, and found that 44% of respondents said that they do not know how to enter/access it. This is followed by 30% who haven't got involved with the metaverse yet, and 28% who feel that the technology required to use it is expensive. Moreover, 20% feel that the metaverse technology still needs to fully develop, and 15% stated that they would need to figure out what to do in the metaverse.Why are some people not interested in using the metaverse?When we asked those people who haven't used the metaverse before and are not interested in using it what their reasons for this are, we found that 51% said that they are not interested in these kinds of technologies in general.Study highlightsThis study presented some interesting highlights on consumer sentiments in the UK regarding the metaverse. This can possibly help small to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) decide if they want to take their business to the metaverse and if yes, when. The metaverse can potentially open up opportunities for buyers and sellers to connect in different and interactive ways. As the metaverse is still not widely utilized, it is yet to be seen how these sectors and opportunities will evolve in the future. When we asked those respondents who have accessed the metaverse about the devices they use to access it, we found that 43% access it through a virtual reality (VR) headset, followed by 30% using a laptop, 28% using a desktop computer and smartphone each, and 15% using a tablet.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Are current users satisfied with their use of the metaverse?&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;What is the level of satisfaction of the current users of the metaverse so far? To gauge that, we asked this to our respondents, and 55% said that they are somewhat satisfied, followed by 32% who are strongly satisfied. However, 12% said that they are somewhat dissatisfied.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;56% current users never purchased anything in the metaverse&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Are users using the metaverse to buy things, services, or experiences? 56% of the respondents who have accessed the metaverse have never used it to purchase anything, whereas 44% have made a purchase through it. This may offer businesses a new opportunity to connect with their buyers and sell their products in a new sphere.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2 id=&quot;67-of-non-users-interested-in-using-it-out-of-curiosity&quot;&gt;67% of non-users interested in using it out of curiosity&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;When we asked non-users who are interested in using the metaverse why they wanted to use it, 67% said that they wanted to use it out of curiosity. This is followed by 34% of the respondents who want to use it for unique or exclusive experiences, 33% who want to use it to socialise, 29% who want to use it to shop online, 22% who want to use it for the convenience of meeting people, and 21% want to use it because it seems to be a new trend. In addition, 13% want to use it for business purposes and 10% of respondents want to use it for professional reasons.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;44% do not know how to enter the metaverse&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;We tried to understand why non-users who are interested in using the metaverse haven&amp;#39;t accessed it yet, and found that 44% of respondents said that they do not know how to enter/access it. This is followed by 30% who haven&amp;#39;t got involved with the metaverse yet, and 28% who feel that the technology required to use it is expensive.
