Also known as order management systems (OMSs), they can track an order and the information it yields throughout its lifecycle, from order entry to fulfilment and after-sales service. ECommerce and retail companies use order processing software to track inventory across warehouses, combine order data from various channels, and coordinate with logistics companies to deliver their products. Aside from direct-to-customer online orders, they can also potentially support in-store purchases through point of sale (POS) tools, as well as hybrid fulfilment, like buy online and pick up in-store (BOPIS) functionalities. Usually, they can also accept payments in various currencies from customers across the world, print packing lists, shipping labels, and return labels. Order management system software feeds order information to distributors and third-party logistics (3PL) companies. Users can maintain a record of customers, their locations, and lifetime values. Sales order management software can help businesses pick, pack, and ship more efficiently to improve order accuracy, prevent stockouts, forecast inventory levels, expand internationally, and meet customer expectations more easily. Typical features of order management solutions are order tracking, shipping management, and returns management. Many order management applications also feature third-party integrations with logistics, communication, and accounting tools.
