I just love to SKIN any UI with this basic, yet simple-to-use tool.

Daily I use this tool to validate the user interface. Whenever there is a use case which I need to resolve in our product, I directly open this tool and start scratching. Yes, I start from the scratch, by having the components separated as a collage. Then I skin the UI by placing them in the positions which looks subtle and usable. Skinning the UI with this tool is easier. Just pick and play and the simplicity of this tool is THE key thing that I like in this tool. Minimized UI is something that we can achieve by splitting the UI into different frames. We can place the components in our desired place to check if customers can feel the importance of the applied element in the page that we are building. We can easily put ourselves in the user's shoes and think from their perspective to check if we are working on a usable interface.

Moreover, the linking between the pages/tiles help us to see how the transition between each pages looks like. I usually go with RAW prototypes by scribbling in my notes. After I started using the Balsamiq tool, I go ONE STEP BEYOND scribbling. Yes, I do mocks and share with my visual designers to think through the page/feature that we want to build. This has helped our designers to a great extend. The time of making them understand the flow and designs has drastically come down. Also, the number of iterations has minimized which in turn has improved the quality of the designs that we are converging. of course, the productive has improved a lot in terms of peer-to-peer level convergence.

Pros

Ease Of Use.
Quick Search.
Default Icon set.
The switch between Wireframe and Sketch i modes easier.
I personally like the linking between the pages.

Cons

Designing the interface for Mobile Skins, and apps for Apple Watch seems to be a show-stopper. This has to be addressed.
At times the screen resolution doesn't supports to take the screen shot from a laptop and to use it in the Balsamiq tool.

Overall, I love the simplicity and intuitiveness of this tool. If you are looking for a product to quickly put together a wireframe or sketch (based on rough ideas) for feedbacks or approvals, then this can be a great option for you.

Pros

I have used Balsamiq for more than 3+ years to create lo-fi wireframes for mobile and web applications. What I love the most about Balsamiq is that it follows UI/UX industry standards, so you can easily use their pre-built templates or icon library without making much changes. It helps you create detailed wireframes in a very short interval of time. I like the ability to export the wireframe designs in a .pdf or .png format. If you are using Balsamiq cloud app on your browser, then you can collaborate with other team members on the same wireframe in real time. This is a very useful feature, especially in those projects, where there are multiple design team members involved. It helps you in incorporating their feedback and comments without much back-and-forth.

Cons

What I disliked about Balsamiq is that the exported .pdf file doesn't have very good resolution. Also, if you need a tool for hi-fi designs or interactive prototyping, then this may not be the best option. There are better products/tools available in the market.

I would say ease of use. It's pretty quick to pick up without much ado.

Pros

The ease of use and simplistic approach to creating prototypes with very low-fidelity is cool for me.

Cons

Sure there is a handful of room for improvement but for the purposes I use it for in combination with other tools, I think there's not much to not like about it.

Streamlines Web Design and Building Landing Pages

Reviewed on 04/08/2022

Pros

My agency uses Balsamiq for web design projects as well as building one-off landing pages for clients. The software is marketed as a wireframing tool butalso has powerful project management and collaboration capabilities. Because of Balsamiq, we have landed more clients and projects which is all due to our ability to visually communicate our vision with our clients and present it to them in a way that makes sense. Before Balsamiq, all wireframing was done in a separate platform as client communication and collaboration and our files were stored in a separate location as well. It made project management as well as file management and versioning extremely difficult and we would often end up with mistakes because certain edits or updates did not make it onto the latest version.

Cons

Usability testing is a great feature but it isn't really all that useful currently since our wireframes don't look much like a real product.

Balsamiq is the agency's go to wireframing tool. The application allows the UX team to quickly convey their ideas to the creative designers without the expectation of deciding the visual branding of the site. Whilst the feature set is fairly limited and the tool hasn't been upgraded recently it is still the most efficient method to draw up wireframes we have found.

Pros

- Probably the easiest wireframing tool to use
- Focused feature set aimed at creating wireframes in the minimum of time
- Very quick to learn with some depth for power users
- Can be very quick to use for experienced users
- Ability to download pre-made components from a central library or share components easily within a project
- Much cheaper than some competitors
- Very stable application

Cons

- Wireframes can look child-like and unprofessional with some settings
- Currently based on Adobe Air technology which is outdated
- No recent feature releases and no fixed release date for the next version leading to a feeling that the product is not moving forward
- Some expected features are still missing such as an easy way to create click-through interactive prototypes

Best Wireframe Software

Reviewed on 08/08/2019

Pros

The best attribute of this software is that it is very easy to use and user friendly. There are different versions available that you can either have a free trial or pay for a license. The free version comes with less features but the main ones are still available. Its interface is very easy to use as it is very much drag and drop. You are also able to convert your wireframes into different formats in order to save them, such as pdfs.

Cons

There are very few User Interface elements which is a disadvantage to this software as UI is constantly being updated. There are also little collaborative features to this software, which is a disappointment as you have to physically show others in order to gain feedback instead of inviting them to edit or view.

I've used it a lot before, but ever since I started using Sketch I find it to be an unnecessary step between a pen drawing in a notepad and creating an actual design in Sketch.

Pros

It's easy to quickly express your thoughts in terms of UX design. Simple pre-made icons and UX elements are available.

Cons

Since I started to use Sketch, I find that I don't need Balsamiq anymore. It's almost as easy to create a well-fleshed-out design there as it is a rough UX in Balsamiq, since you can create "symbols" that can be used to quickly build a final design.

I am a UX and Service Designer who often designs mockups and low-fi prototypes to test out new solutions. I like using Balsamiq to stray away from focusing too much on visuals in the early stage of prototyping.

Pros

The basic look and feel of the wireframes allow both designers and clients to focus solely on the user experience, in low-fi prototypes.

Cons

As time goes on and competitors are moving forward, Balsamiq is falling behing and feeling a bit outdated. Would be great to have more integrations.

I still recommend this tool for the team who likes a tool for managing wireframes and prototypes. It gives the vital requirement for a mockup.

Pros

1. Simple and classic look - Balsamiq gives an old-school feels to its components which I really like. It is simple and easy to blend to the documents/presentation you can add it into.
2. Drag and drop functionality - This tool is very easy to understand and manage. Training for this tool will not take long
3. Many components to choose from - Buttons, dropdowns, text fields, and more. From simple to up to date components, you can find them here.
4. Easy to manage tool
5. Great for presentation too
6. Output is comprehensive for the whole team of any role - Because it is simple and classic, all team members can appreciate it too: developer/QA/designer

Cons

1. I think that the fact that it is too plain, it can limit the user from expressing what he/she likes the prototype to become.
2. The interactions/simulations with the components in Balsamiq is too limited
3. Collaboration for instant feedback is a limitation here

Balsamiq is a great way to create quick wireframe to visually capture ideas

Reviewed on 18/01/2018

Pros

The ease of use and the numerous options make Balsamiq a great tool to use to create quick wireframes. I've used it many times to create designs to illustrate ideas. The note feature allows you to add clarifications to the items in your wireframe.

Cons

I find the navigation a little clumsy. Additionally, when you go to the full screen view or hide panes and other menus it's a bit difficult to get it back to the way it was before. Also, the export feature isn't great. The output tends to be too small to read if you have many items in the board.

Response from Balsamiq Studios

Hi Sarathi and thanks for your review.

I just wanted to reach out and see if we can help with the pain points that you mentioned:

- The different panels/elements of the editor are described on this page, along with the shortcuts to toggle them off/on: https://docs.balsamiq.com/desktop/overview

- Pressing ESC while in the Full Screen Presentation Mode allows you to go back to the editor.

- About the Export: we'd love to know more about your issue and which export option you are using. Could you reach out to [email protected] so we can help more?

While it's totally fine if you don't have time for this, we'll be here to help if you'd like! :)

A beautifully created tool that is a pleasure to use.

Pros

It doesn't matter whether it is a web site or a full blow desktop or mobile app, Balsamiq will make it as quick and simple as can be.

One of the things that Balsamiq really shines at is that a newbie can start using it immediately as it has a well thought out userinterface. But then dig deeper under the service, and you'll find all sorts of powerful features that allow even the most complex mockup to be created with ease.

I also love the look of the created mockups. Unlike some tools that try to create photorealistic versions of your design, Balsamiq focuses more on creating a proper wireframe mockup (although other options are avialable) and there actually look darned cool and are very presentable.

Cons

What's not to like. Balsamiq does exactly what it claims to do and it does it beautifully. I've used it for years and I honestly can't think of any times when I thought it was lacking.

By keeping with the 'sketch' look, clients don't get sidetracked with imagery, or colors, or fonts - instead they focus on the layout and functionality of the website or app. I love creating navigational PDFs for clients with this tool.

Cons

My experience with Balsamiq has been quite good, it helps me to make sketches, wireframes in a very fast, simple way, speeding up the delivery time of the projects, besides that they can be shared immediately thanks to their export methods, as well I can export them directly to a disk in the cloud and share it with the client quickly.

Pros

There are several reasons why I like balsamiq, it is a tool with a very low learning curve, quite intuitive, and does not need any type of download since it is hosted in the cloud so it is accessible from any device, it has a very useful autosave system that helps you not miss the progress in the project, is excellent for collaborative projects because it allows to invite colleagues or other people, also has a desktop version, supports various forms of export in different formats, from pdf, even images like jpg.

Cons

What I like the least about balsamiq is its interface, it is something old fashioned, besides that they can add a greater variety of objects to integrate in wireframes, sketches, mockups, etc. Another thing that I do not like is that when it comes to overlapping objects on each other very small, it can be quite a challenge, it would be nice if you could edit the position of the object as in web development, with a z-index.

Balsamiq remains an extremely simple and easy to use tool for wireframing - infact it is the default choice of a bunch of product managers, specially at the beginning of their career. The ease allows you to ship out basic wireframes at an amazing pace. Because of this reason it strongly fits into the early stage startup culture. I have personally developed the first version of web apps, mobile apps on balsamiq and never has my dev team complained. It gets a bit tricky to use this extensively at an evolved product stage but nevertheless the tool works and works just fine.

Pros

Simplicity. Anyone, literally anyone can use Balsamiq. The web demo is simple and then all the leading dev and business tools have a balsamiq app - be it Google for Work, Confluence.

Cons

Balsamiq - is a great skeleton wireframing tool and that remains its biggest limitation. It leaves a lot to be desired. Especially the moments when the PM's want to add colors and make the exact replica designs, Balsamiq might not be the best thing to use. + The license fees for a tool which allows only this feels a bit on the higher side.

I've been using Mockups before I start building websites or apps because it helps me visualize what I want my project to look like and to see how each element will look next to each other. Although I use other design/prototyping tools, I find that doing low fidelity mockups on Balsamiq is a lot quicker and more efficient because it helps eliminate assets and design elements that I don't need for my projects so that I don't waste too much time when creating a higher fidelity prototype.

Pros

This software was very easy to use due to its clean, basic interface and great keyboard shortcuts. I like that you can change the skin of your mockups with a cartoonish hand-drawn look or a more cleaner wireframe for that professional look. I also like the fact that it's a one time payment only and NOT a monthly subscription that you have to pay to use, especially in this day and age when almost everything is moving towards subscription based services.

Cons

I don't really have much negative things to say about Mockups just because it does what it was designed to do, but it would be great if there was an Android/IOS app for people who want to create really quick mockups on the go.

For many years I have been using the standalone version of the application almost daily. It is an easy application to use and in a short time you achieve a first iteration for a project. It has a "sketchy" aspect, which is a registered trademark (maybe because I have been using it for years, but I love it)

Pros

The general disposition of the elements to use to carry out the work is good and its usability also. It allows to load personal assets to use in different projects and export as PDF or images.

Cons

It does not allow high-level mockups in HTML, rather it desatca for being a "first version" of them. Even his "sketchy style" make it not become an almost final model of an application to be developed.

The beloved standard for wireframes

Reviewed on 24/07/2019

Pros

Balsamiq's comic sans typography and collection of basic elements make it easy to build your wireframe without getting too distracted by making it look good. It's fast and easy to use. Also their licensing is very freelancer-friendly!

Cons

A more serious-looking but still neutral text and symbol library would have allowed me to continue using Balsamiq at my new job, where the comic sans and hand-drawn feel didn't work. At the time I stopped using it, there was also no Sketch integration - since I do mockups in Sketch, I want my wireframes in there so that they're easy to transform into complete mockups.
