About Countfire

Countfire is a true automated takeoff solution for electrical estimators that allows users to automatically count symbols across multiple PDF drawings. The automatic matching algorithm works across all drawings and quantities, and is automatically broken down into areas. Features include linear and area measurements, automatic Excel spreadsheet creation, and accuracy reports.

Users can drag and drop PDF drawings directly onto the file upload drop zone to create a project. Projects can be broken down into disciplines in order to group all drawings together that have similar symbols. For example, all lighting drawings to the “Lighting” discipline, and all power drawings to a “Power” discipline.

Users can rotate drawings and add drawing titles to have them carried over to the Excel spreadsheet. The search engine helps find symbol descriptions, and the editing tool allows single click removal of unnecessary elements.

Once a symbol is selected on the screen, the software’s counting algorithm will then automatically find all similar symbols on the current drawing, as well as count all similar looking symbols across all other drawings that have been uploaded into the same discipline.

In addition to automatic counting, Countfire also provides a set of tools for manually counting symbols. Using demarcations Countfire allows users to break down quantities, usually according to a pricing schedule, which are included in their own column within the final Excel spreadsheet.

Countfire also allows users to calculate coverage areas to visually check for certain device types such as PIRs, Smoke Detectors, etc., to verify whether a system meets certain operational or regulatory requirements.

Key benefits of Countfire

Countfire allows users to automatically count symbols across multiple PDF drawings within a project to help cut the time taken for take-offs.

Users check the paper size and scale of their drawings to set the scale, and then draw over the top of the lengths to measure.

Countfire includes four separate stages of checking built into the process of completing a project to help ensure accuracy.

Users can split quantities however they like - even after they've been counted - by creating demarcations.

At the end of each project, Countfire automatically generates an Excel spreadsheet which contains all symbols, lengths and areas quantified on a project.

Future of Estimating

Pros

Countfire is a dream to use. It does everything I wanted when I imagined a program to help automate the takeoff process, and they are still improving and adding more.

The ability to hide the background and define zones are two features that make complicated plans go so much quicker. Out of the hundreds of projects we've completed already, very few have issues that hinder the programs functionality. But when something like that does pop up, there is always somebody to respond quickly and take a look. They always are happy to hear customer feedback and take suggestions. I can't say enough good about the team behind this software, they are going to change the industry. I can't believe a couple of months ago in 2021 I was still printing drawings and using a yellow highlighter.

Cons

What I like least about the software is the output excel file is a bit complicated compared to what we are used to. I only count devices of one discipline at a time, there is really no reason for more than one sheet. After I download the take off from countfire I always delete about half the rows / columns and transpose the x and y.

Reasons for Switching to Countfire

Stack was mostly manual counting, and charged extra for the auto count that was slow and rarely worked.

CountFire Automated Take-Off Software

I could not be more pleased with CounFire. It is fast, accurate, easy to use, and has cut my time to perform a take-off by a factor of 10. Some may question a factor of 10, but try it and see that drawing symbols when counted on one drawing are also counted on all other drawings within the project drawing package automatically. Orientation is not an issue, and items not picked up are easily identified and added to the correct symbol list. Check drawings are also supplied as part of the final report to assure all errors have been resolved.

Pros

CountFire being a cloud based service gets you up and running quickly. CountFire Sales is there to get you started and introduce you to Technical Assistance and Training. The On-Line Help function is integral to the CountFire Platform allowing you to be able to function seamlessly as you work on projects. I can count drawing elements or make extremely accurate measurements in one tenth of the time I did manually without the cost of drawing reproduction. The Final Reports are perfectly formatted in MSExcel and ready for Bill of Material development.

Cons

I am still looking for a Con. I thought that since CountFire is in Great Britain that communications might be hampered by five, (5) time zones, but this was not the case. CountFire was there 24X7 to solve my self-inflicted start-up issues.

I found the customer support was second to none, there is a little chat box in the corner when you are doing take offs and if you are having any issues then you can talk on here and in my experience you get help normally within half an hour.
The first 2 drawings that were quite big the auto count feature didn't work and so I had to count manually and I had software already a lot cheaper that I could do that with.
When i had a drawing that worked, it worked well and saved a lot of time. But honestly the cost of this software you'd have to do a heck of a lot of estimating with drawings that work to make up for the huge cost.

Pros

The auto count feature when it works does save a lot of time. The customer support and training is excellent.

Cons

The cost is way too much. not all drawings work with the auto count feature.

It is beneficial in a lot of aspects as it speeds up the take off process

Pros

Speed in doing take offs

Being able to remove the background on "busy" drawings so symbols are easier to find

Cons

Although you can create Zones to separate from the legend, it can sometimes pull through legend details and transfer them to the drop box quants.

It can be difficult to separate symbols in different areas. For example if you highlight twin socket it picks them all up but you might want to separate those on Dado Trunking or on a wall or area because they have a different finish
