About GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

GIMP is an open-source image manipulation software that enables businesses, graphic designers, scientists, illustrators, and photographers to edit and retouch images, design icons, create free-hand artworks, and convert files into various formats. The platform uses several programming languages, such as C++, Python, Scheme, and Perl to edit and manipulate scripted images.

GIMP allows businesses to select widget themes, icon sizes, and toolsets based on the artwork or design, save animations, and enhance images using various tools including the corrective mode and channel mixer. It provides several third-party plugins, enabling photographers to add multiple file formats and image filters to the software. Illustrators can utilize a suite of painting tools such as brush, pencil, clone, airbrush, and blend, among others to create artworks and designs according to individual requirements.

GIMP supports various file formats such as GIF, PDF, JPEG, SVG, and BMP and lets designers load or save files from remote locations using FTP, HTTP, SMB, and SFTP protocols. Businesses can utilize the storage space by saving documents with archived file extensions such as ZIP or GZ.

Being community driven alone makes this product feel so much better. And it has come a long since we first tried it a few years ago. GIMP has evolved as we've learned our way around it. Looking forward to a future with greater updates to the UI and workflow.

Pros

The fact that it can almost do everything that Photoshop can do and for no charge at all - this helped us a ton. We did not have to pay a monthly subscription that over multiple users, adds up to quite a fee. Adding functionality that isn't otherwise provided is easy thanks to a large collection of assorted extensions.

Cons

For all the features it provides, one very important feature is missing. The ability to edit and render CMYK images, without having to run through a few hoops. Since most of our work is for online use, we do not see it as a limitation. But for someone looking at print media work alone, they might have to wait a few months before the official release has this functionality baked in.

Unleash Your Creative Potential with GIMP

GIMP, or GNU Image Manipulation Program, stands tall as a formidable open-source alternative to premium image editing software. GIMP earns my highest recommendation for anyone seeking a powerful yet accessible image editing software. With its expansive feature set, user-friendly interface, and passionate community, GIMP empowers creators to push boundaries and turn imagination into reality. Embrace the freedom of creativity with GIMP, and unlock endless possibilities for your artistic endeavours.

Pros

As an avid photographer and graphic designer, I've explored various tools over the years, but GIMP consistently impresses me with its robust features and versatility. One of the most striking aspects of GIMP is its extensive toolkit, rivaling even some paid software options. From basic adjustments like cropping and resizing to advanced techniques such as layer masking and non-destructive editing, GIMP offers a comprehensive suite suitable for both amateurs and professionals alike. The ability to extend its functionality through plugins and scripts further enhances its adaptability to diverse creative needs.

Cons

While GIMP offers a wide range of features for image editing and manipulation, it may lack some advanced capabilities found in commercial software. For example, certain advanced retouching tools, content-aware fill, or seamless integration with cloud services may not be as robust or polished in GIMP compared to its commercial counterparts.

Nice Photoshop alternative for basic image editing tasks

As a digital marketer, I’m using GIMP as an alternative to Photoshop to cover my daily Social Media purposes.
Although it is a nice Photoshop alternative that copies almost all of its tools, it is obvious that the user interface has a way weaker design, but for an open-source free software, it offers a decent solution.
GIMP is suitable for daily micro-tasks such as resizing, blurring, cropping, layers management, rotating, scaling, and background erasing.
More complex tasks such as object selection, cloning, shrinking/growing area, etc. may need more effort.
Judging by my overall experience these are the (+) and (-).
Pros
- Easy installation
- Open-source/free software
- Includes almost all the essential Photoshop tools
Cons
- Outdated UI
- Some tools (shrink, selection) are way more complex and time-consuming
- Sometimes the exported result is not of the requested quality(maybe that depends on the user’s skills level)
- Absence of Shapes tool which is helpful in Photoshop
My comments are about version GIMP 2.10.32.
Concluding, I would totally recommend GIMP as a Photoshop alternative for simple daily image editing tasks, but I’m not sure if that’s the right tool for professionals.

The fact GIMP is free is its main advantage - it can do much of what leading options like Photoshop can achieve, but there's usually a bit of a workaround or it's a bit more difficult to do the same thing, with some extra steps involved.

Pros

GIMP is free - this is its main advantage over alternatives. You can also use add-ons and plugins to extend its capabilities even further. If you stick with it, you can achieve much the same as you would with paid alternatives.

Cons

The UI/UX is not as intuitive as some paid alternatives, and it can feel like a lot of effort at the start to get used to everything.

All my photo editing, bitmap graphics and special effects. It takes a lot of extensions that can become costly with photoshop and it all comes free, and because it is open source there is a lot of free online support that could be costly with photoshop. I challenge you to try gimp for 2 months and see if you do not get a lot more done without all the Bells and whistles.

Pros

Gimp has become my go to program, it has all the robustness of adobe Photoshop and more there has been so many things that I have been able to do.

Cons

I have no complaints with gimp for the last 22 years I have been using gamp almost exclusively. It is able to complete any task that I need and I see no cons with this program

Reasons for Switching to GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

In June of 1995 I began school for graphic design. At that time, they were just beginning to use computers to create graphics. We learned everything on the Mac OS interface. The top graphic design programs were all produced by adobe. Photoshop was one of the programs which was very expensive to own. Windows 3.1 was two versions behind the Mac. I had to use this program to create all my graphics. Which I could not afford so I used Trial versions they would always run out. In 2000 I began experimenting with the Linux operation system and discovered gimp. Gimp has become my go to program, it has all the robustness of adobe Photoshop and more there has been so many things that I have been able to do.
