Source code editing for MacOS, Windows and Linux

About Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code is a source code editor, which helps businesses build and debug web applications running on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Features include syntax highlighting, code refactoring and navigation, snippets, Emmet abbreviations, command-line interface (CLI), and text wrap.

The software lets developers edit codes using multi-cursor, shrink/expand selection, autosave, hot exit, and find and replace capabilities. With IntelliSense, users can receive suggestions about list members, function definitions, parameter info, or variable types while writing codes. The built-in debugging tool allows programmers to edit, compile, and debug loops, enable breakpoints to suspend the running code and view variables or behavior of memory, and log a message to the console using logpoint.

Visual Studio Code offers integration with GitHub, helping developers share source codes with team members, clone a repository, as well as view and manage pull requests. It provides refactoring operations, extract method and extract variable, which lets users improve code base through restructure, without modifying the runtime behavior.

I started out with low expectations and after the Visual Studio 2023 on Mac was cancelled, I moved over all devlopment of our 55Gb code base to Visual Studio Code.
Never going back.

Pros

I thought that Visual Studio Code was "just" an editor. Hey, I've been around from the early days vi, notepad, ..
This is a different ball game. Visual Studio Code understands your code, the integration with lint, code snippets, plugins and AI makes it a dream come true.
Now, I just need more nuget and Azure overview and I'm totally happy.

Cons

The simple installation, sync between all systems - well - it's a marvel. Cannot complain.
Speed. Cannot complain.
Quality. Cannot complain.
NO CONS! Just download if you haven't yet!

VSCode and the turnover of the market

Reviewed on 21/03/2024

Pros

It's free, open-source, highly maintained, compatible with all platforms, highly configurable, easy to develop for and on. Huge online community and contributors and high integration with almost any available product out there.

Cons

Projects are scoped into project files, and it's quite difficult to manage in a single windows all the other projects that you might be working at the same time with different configurations. This also includes the ssh tunnels to server machines to visualize the folder and file structure and make real time modifications, which requires you most of the time to have a separate window instead of a tab in the same one.
