Cloud storage service for developers and IT teams

About Amazon S3

Amazon S3 is a simple storage service that helps developers and IT teams store, backup, archive and retrieve data from anywhere across the web. It allows administrators to store data in buckets, append tags to objects, configure access controls for several clients, conduct high-volume data analysis, gain insights into storage usage and gauge trends based on activities.

Features of Amazon S3 include storage management, data analytics, access management, security, data processing, data transfer, multi-factor authentication, and more. It provides replication capabilities, which lets users duplicate data buckets along with respective metadata and tags, improving disaster recovery and compliance management across the organization.

Gold Standard for bucketed data

Reviewed on 24/05/2024

Pros

The bucketing system and file structure are easy to navigate, and the UI is intuitive. There's plenty of documentation, and the UI is approachable for those less technically inclined (we have folks with workflows that involve moving around some S3 data, but not getting much deeper than that, and being able to easily copy/move folders using the UI makes more sense than trying to teach CLI commands). No issues with reliability of access.

Cons

Integrations are most effective when using other AWS products, but that's fairly standard these days. Would love to see macros or AI assistance for regular, repeatable tasks.

It's a great product that's always available and is the gold standard for object storage in the cloud. I don't have any complains.

Pros

It's simple, it works and it's cheap. Any time I need to store unorganised data my default is to put it in an S3 bucket. I love how it's the industry standard and any data analytics tools always have an s3 integration.

Cons

I wish I could see a preview of objects stored in the buckets without having to download them

Amazon S3 for Big data

Reviewed on 12/12/2018

Pros

Amazon S3 is the best file system in the space that deals with Big Data. Amazon S3 is able to host big files in an elastic way without worry about out of space. Amazon S3 assigns user roles to each individual bucket. The administrator can define read and write access policies for the entire bucket.

Cons

The first issue in Amazon S3 is that it does not provide email notification to the users in case that a bucket or a sub-directory has been changed by adding/deleting files. Also, integrating S3 with SSO is really challenging. Regardless the fact that Amazon S3 deals with Big Data, the Amazon S3 client API has many problems when a file size is greater than 5GB. A lot of workarounds should be done to split big files into parts and merge them successfully.

i will use it a thousand times

Reviewed on 02/08/2024

Pros

One of the things I liked most about Amazon S3 was its reliability and scalability. The service is designed to handle large amounts of data and deliver it quickly without any interruptions or delays. This makes it perfect for businesses and individuals who need a reliable storage solution for their data. Additionally, the pricing structure of S3 is very competitive, making it a cost-effective option for storing large amounts of data. The user interface is also user-friendly and allows for easy management of data and access control. Overall, I found Amazon S3 to be a highly efficient and dependable cloud storage service.

Cons

It was challenging to set up and configure initially. The pricing structure can also be confusing and it was difficult to accurately estimate the cost. Additionally, data transfer and access speeds can be slow at times, causing delays and frustration.
