This bug was replicated and raised to Morningstar to implement a fix. We never received an acknowledgement of raising the bug. This took around half a day to reset the investment list to the prior specifications. As a result, we are still using the legacy Morningstar which does seem to be quite slow compared to other software we use. Several of our data points were turned off in August 2025 with very little notice. We had to reach out for the documentation on which datapoints were being replaced - which was not a one to one mapping and so was unhelpful. This required around a day of time to assess whether the new data points were appropriate replacements. Some of the responses to the queries on the new data points were bizarre - i.e. EBITDA LTM is not reported well so they suggested applying EBITDA Margin% to Business Revenue, which is using derivative information to recalculate the input. We were also advised to use spreadsheet transformations to get data in the format which it was provided in prior to the data point switch, e.g. multiplying ROIC to make it a value between 1-100 (as per the old data point) instead of 0-1 (as per the new data point) without having the option to change this within MSD itself. The AI offering is still at a very basic stage. In a session to discuss this, most of our questions were responded to by noting our question was "part of the AI roadmap" and so provides very limited value to us now. Only a small portion of the data points offered by Morningstar are supported by the AI solution. > > Frustrating and time consuming. I can quickly screen the entire fund universe and narrow it down to the most relevant funds in a few clicks. I can then easily apply relevant data points, like risk and return metrics, to quickly gage the fund performances. I also appreciate the automatic calculations on the aggregated level for a custom portfolio. This saves me a lot of time when I want to quickly check the overall performance or exposure of my custom portfolio. > > **Cons**: Direct has a relatively old and complex interface, particularly for inexperienced users. It is not always intuitive where to click to access specific data points or functionalities. For example, you need to right click on the fund row to view a fund's underlying holdings. This makes it somewhat challenging for inexperienced or infrequent users. However, once you get a hold of the logic and necessary pathways, Direct is a must-have for a fund analyst. > > The overall experience is very good. I particularly appreciate the wide range of options available for conducting various types of fund analysis.
